As a provider of private tuition in English it is important, I feel, to give you a bit of information regarding my background. During my formative years at Hornsey High School for Girls in North London it seems like eons ago, my teachers identified that I had the kind of personality and qualities to support others pupils. Furthermore due to my love of English as well as my position within the school, meant that I was a good choice and a positive role model to mentor challenging children.
In some ways it was a natural progression to take up a teaching career and eventually become involved in providing private tuition in English. So I left London in the early 70s to attend Manchester University’s Didsbury Campus. Four years later, I embarked upon my teaching career armed with my Commendation in teaching, my university degree and loaded with enthusiasm and images of Mr Chips.
Over the years, I have taught in disadvantaged schools in inner city Manchester as well as fairly academic 6th form and FE colleges in the South Manchester region. My last few years have been spent teaching children in well-established schools in the South Manchester area. Pupils found it beneficial having a private English tutor working in areas of literature and language, which they were unsure of, in preparation for their final examinations. This was most rewarding.
However, the one thing most of my students had in common is that they sometimes needed a private English lesson and a teacher who would listen and help them to understand a certain aspect of their native language; improve an element of their writing skills which would enable them to leave school or college fully equipped and/or qualified to progress either to a higher education establishment or to embark on the world of work.
I do feel as an English tutor, I have achieved this and much more – Hopefully giving students an enjoyment of English be it Literature or Language, an interest in and desire to enjoy and understand the written word. With over forty years’ experience, I am still teaching and loving it, as I have also started and been most successful as a private English tutor and an online tutor.
